Smokeless Tobacco in Baseball

10/26/2011

The link below is an interesting commentary on the use of alcohol in major league baseball clubhouses, which has become an emotional topic after members of the Boston Red Sox were reported to have been drinking alcohol in their clubhouse, possibly during games, creating quite an uproar. As I read this, however, I was struck by how little attention seems to have been paid to major leaguers' use of tobacco (particularly smokeless tobacco). They seem to have been given a free pass on this, regardless of the clearly demonstrated dangerous health consequences. I don't know about you, but I think would much rather have players drinking a beer in the clubhouse (particularly if it is after a game, granted) than using tobacco during games in which they are playing. Your thoughts?
